Net Hanger Apprentice
Full Time - Apprenticeship
Are you a dependable, hard working individual that likes to work with your hands and takes pride in your work? You may be a good fit for our net hanging apprenticeship!
Our apprenticeship has a short term introductory training period in the fall, followed by a full time seasonal commitment the following year from January or February through mid June or until we run out of work. This could possibly extend into the beginning of September if desired. Our season is highly dependent on variability in the commercial fishing industry.
We need a minimum commitment from February first until mid-June. This makes it a great opportunity for a seasonal job before seining (A type of commercial fishing based out of Cordova.), or other summer jobs!
We would love to train someone who wants to grow into this as a career with opportunity to manage or buy into the business in the future. Please indicate in your application if this is something you envision.
An initial introductory training the previous fall is recommended, net hanging is not for everyone and its best for both of us if you can give it a try before committing to an entire season.
Your Responsibilities May Include
Hanging Nets - Using hanging twine on a needle to attach the web to the cork line or weed line and lead line.
Building Cork Lines - Using twine to tie down corks on the cork line and attaching the weed line.
Strip Nets and Repair Lines - Remove old hanging twine from nets with a knife and repair worn spots on lines.
Finishing nets - various tasks to complete the nets including but not limited to attaching lead line rings, splicing lines, hanging breast lines and bagging nets.
Required Qualifications
Attention to detail & ability to meet high quality standards.
Dependability, personal motivation and a good attitude.
Must be physically fit and able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be authorized to work in the United States for any U.S. employer.
Salary
We are a small team, with high consequence deadlines. It is very important that our hangers show up and get their hours in every week. If they are able to do so, they are eligible for a $3/hr bonus at the end of the season.
Pay starts at minimum wage and increases with productivity. Motivated, efficient hangers are expected to make around $15/hr after bonuses their first year, and $18 to $30/hr (paid by piecework) after bonuses their second year.
This is the type of job where you get out what you put into it. If you learn fast and hustle, you will make more money.
